Alright, so I had this little weekend gig, right? Fencing job. But these folks weren’t after your typical, cookie-cutter, perfectly-level fence. Nope, they wanted *rustic*. They wanted character. They wanted something that looked like it had a story to tell. And you know me, I’m always up for a challenge that involves a bit of creative problem-solving. Let me walk you through how we tackled it.
First thing’s first: Out with the old! We ripped out the existing fence, which, let’s just say, had seen better days.
The Crew & Concrete
Now, this is where the day got interesting. One of the lads who used to work for me, John Mcclane (yes, like Die Hard), showed up. Best, or worst, on sort in his old uniform. I wasn’t overly impressed, haha.
Anyway, the clients wanted to ditch the old timber posts and gravel boards for concrete ones. Solid choice, especially if you want something that’ll stand the test of time. Concrete’s tough, like my trusty work boots, but we can make it look good!
The Tree Challenge
Here’s where things got a little tricky. There was a tree smack-dab in the middle of the fence line. Couldn’t just chop it down, could we? Nope, had to work *around* it. And I’m gonna show you how we did it. Stay tuned.
Reusing Panels
I had an epiphany! Instead of slapping up brand new fence panels – which, let’s be honest, can be a bit overrated – why not reuse the old ones? Think about it: they’re already weathered, already got that rustic vibe going. Plus, it’s a bit more sustainable, right? One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Battling Brambles
Of course, no good fencing job is complete without a bit of a battle with nature. We had to clear out a thick patch of tartan bramble at the bottom of the garden. Let me tell you, that stuff was vicious! Looked like I’d had a fight with a cat by the time I was done. But you gotta go through these things, don’t you?
The Finished Masterpiece
And there we have it! The finished product. Forget those perfectly level fence lines! Nah, the old up-and-down look is where it’s at. Gives it that authentic, lived-in feel.
Remember that tree? We built a little pallet feature around it, incorporating different sized panels for a unique look. It’s beautiful! It adds character and gives the fence a totally bespoke feel.
- Different Panel Sizes: Adds visual interest and avoids that cookie-cutter look.
- Varying Colors: Makes the fence look a bit brighter and more vibrant.
- Pallet Integration: A clever way to incorporate natural elements and build around obstacles.
We even ran out of panels for a corner bit, so we stuck two together. Imperfect? Maybe. But that’s the point! It adds to the rustic charm. If you’re looking for even more fun ideas, check out these trending fence ideas!
The Rustic Advantage
Why go rustic? Well, for starters, it’s unique. It’s not something you see every day. It shows that you’ve got an eye for detail and a appreciation for character. And honestly, it’s just more interesting to look at than a boring, perfectly straight fence. Plus, it has a natural feel.
- Uniqueness: Stands out from the crowd.
- Character: Tells a story.
- Visual Interest: More engaging to look at.
For a project like this you can incorporate something from the trending section to add that extra something special.
