If you’re a lover of expressive fashion, you’ll know that the 1980s were a true golden age for office style. Think commanding silhouettes, bold patterns, and punchy accessories. But you don’t need a closet full of vintage finds to nail an 80s workwear outfit—in fact, some of my favorite looks have come from mixing timeless pieces with clever styling tricks. Let me walk you through how I build a look that channels pure 80s corporate energy, using both thrifted treasures and today’s staples.
Timeless Foundations: Reviving the Pussy Bow Blouse
Let’s start with the top. The pussy bow blouse is a secret weapon in any retro lover’s arsenal. I found mine at a thrift store, and though I’m sure it’s a contemporary piece, the style’s legacy in the 70s, 80s, and 90s is undeniable.
- Why I Love It: The draped bow detail adds instant polish and a touch of soft femininity, while still commanding attention—making it perfect for office-ready looks.
- Styling Tips: Wear with the bow neatly tied or in a loose knot, depending on your vibe. The blouse pairs well with everything from classic pencil skirts to high-waisted trousers.
- Fit: Look for a lightweight material (mine’s a silky poly blend) for easy tucking and layering.
- Washing: Always check the label, but a gentle wash or hand wash is usually best to keep the bow looking crisp.
The Pencil Skirt: A Timeless Silhouette
Next up: the pencil skirt. I thrifted a suit with a skirt from what I believe is the 90s (hello, original Woody’s price tag!), but honestly, you could find a similar style in stores right now. This is part of the beauty of vintage office fashion—the basics never go out of style.
- Fabric/Material: Mine’s a classic wool blend, perfect for chillier months and maintains its structure all day.
- Fit & Style: High-rise, knee-length, and straight—a style that flatters and works for countless occasions.
- Modern Flexibility: While my skirt isn’t straight from the 80s, with the right styling it easily leans into that era’s vibe (especially with a broad-shouldered jacket or blouse).
80s Details: Shoulder Pads, Accessories, and the Power of Hair
Here’s where you transform “nice outfit” into “wow, is this Vogue 1985?”:
- Add Big Shoulders: Popping in removable shoulder pads gives any blazer, cardigan, or even a blouse that instantly recognizable 80s silhouette. I’m always amazed by how much presence this little addition adds!
- Statement Earrings: Chunky, geometric, or gold—go as bold as you want. Big earrings are basically required for the 80s work look.
- Bold Accessories: I accessorized with a vintage Coach briefcase, layered jewelry (my grandmother’s watch is a personal touch), and stacked necklaces for a nod to maximalism.
- Shoes: My Oleg Cassini pumps are a true vintage score, but any classic pump with an 80s “twist” (asymmetrical vamps, metallics, or a pointy toe) ties the look together.
Hair & Makeup: Your Secret 80s Workwear Weapon
One of the lessons I’ve learned—often through trial and error—is that 80s workwear style is as much about beauty as it is about clothing.
- Hair: Teased volume, a soft wave, or even a short bob all scream 80s. Side combs don’t always work for my shorter hair, so I use bobby pins for hold.
- Makeup: Play up the blush, add a pop of color on your lips, and don’t shy away from a bold brow. I remind myself: “If it’s not perfect, it’s accurate”—YouTube beauty guru-style, 80s edition!
Real-World Fit, Feel, and Comfort
As someone who wears these looks day in and day out (whether for work or just because it makes me feel powerful), here are my honest thoughts:
- Fit: Vintage pencil skirts run slim through the waist, so try before you buy or check for a return policy if shopping online.
- Stretchiness: Not much in authentic 80s wool blends—so size for comfort!
- Price: Thrifted pieces are much friendlier on the wallet (I’ve found fully lined, high-quality 80s suit sets for less than $50).
- Return/Exchange: Vintage shops often have strict policies; I keep that in mind before making big purchases.
- Care: A steamer is your best friend for blouses and structured skirts.
Why I Love Mixing Eras for a Modern-Classic Look
What’s fantastic about the 80s workwear outfit formula is its adaptability. You don’t need to cosplay the decade—you can take the spirit and make it yours. I find so much freedom in combing my modern finds (think a fresh pussy bow blouse or up-to-date skirt) with vintage accessories or statement jackets. This mashup always feels sophisticated yet personal.
If you’re inspired but not sure where to start, check out trending finds, or seek out pop culture pieces for that perfect accessory to finish off your retro look. For added flair, don’t forget to browse event and tour collections or even sports styles for fun, unexpected layering pieces.
Conclusion: You Can Absolutely Nail 80s Workwear—No Time Machine Required
If you’re craving the confident, colorful, and unmistakably bold energy of a 1980s office, you don’t need to hunt for “true” vintage at every turn. A pussy bow blouse, sleek pencil skirt, big earrings, and a touch of dramatic hair can take you there, no matter where your pieces come from. The secret is in the styling, the attitude, and the joy you bring to the process.
So grab your accessories, add some shoulder pads, and step into work like you own the decade. Your 80s power look is already waiting—right in your closet.

This is a pussy bow blouse,
and it’s a perfect example of how you can dress in 1980s style
without actually having 1980s pieces.
I thrifted this a while ago.
I’m certain it’s a modern piece.
However, this is a style that was popular in the 80s.
It was popular in the 70s and the 90s, too,
and it is a fairly timeless style.
We’re going for a workwear type look today.
I love 80s workwear. However,
the skirt I’m about to show you,
I don’t think is actually from the 80s, either.
I thrifted this suit about a year ago.
When I got it, it still had the Woody’s tag on it.
And it went out of business in 1995,
so this suit had to have been made some time before that.
I do believe it’s a 90s suit,
though I’m not 100% sure.
The skirt that comes with it is a classic pencil skirt,
which is timeless. And you could style this in so many ways.
You could style this 1940s if you wanted to.
I think this blouse would benefit from some shoulder pads
that would also be very 80s,
so we’re gonna add those. Trying to dress like a specific time period.
Hair, makeup,
and accessories can make all the difference.
A lot of 1980s silhouettes are actually based on 1940 silhouettes.
But to make it look 1980s,
you need to get the hair, makeup,
and accessories correct.
It’s not an 80s outfit without some big Earrings.
So let’s find some of those.
It’s for my mom’s in the 80s.
And have YouTube beauty gurus in the 80s.
So I tell myself if it’s not great,
it’s accurate.
I feel like once I do the hair,
it’ll start reading a lot more 80s.
I went a little shorter than I normally do,
and the side combs aren’t working,
so I think we’re just gonna use Bobby pins.
For shoes,
I was thinking these 80s Oleg casino pumps with an asymmetrical vamp.
These are actually from the eighties.
My vintage coach briefcase.
And there we go. There is my 80s workwear look
with my modern top and a skirt that you could probably get modern to.
Because it’s the pencil skirt. It’s timeless.
